The importance of prayer is so well stated in the words of the Pope:
"I hereby wholeheartedly commend your noble initiative and purpose to offer your times of the Eucharistic Sacrifice and Eucharistic Adoration, holy hours, vigils, rosaries, fasting and in particular the frequent offering of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for world peace, the conversion of hearts and for the end of the scourge of abortion and the culture of death in the world." - Pope John Paul II in giving his blessing to the 9th Annual International Week of Prayer and Fasting, October 5, 2001.
"Abortion is the scourge of America." Pope John Paul II said in Denver that "America is in danger of losing its soul." He was referring to the sin of abortion. We are a world leader and we are setting terrible examples. This Pope repeatedly warned America of the gravity of this sin. He said "America, defend life so that you may live in peace and harmony. Woe to you if you do not succeed in defending life." -
On October 8, 2000, Pope John Paul II entrusted the Third Millennium to Our Lady. His prayer started with: "We entrust to you all people, beginning with the weakest: the babies yet unborn" They were his first concern.
What will convert America and save the world? " My answer is prayer. What we need is for every Parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer." - Mother Teresa of Calcutta
“I am pleased to learn that once again the faithful of the diocese will observe
January 22 as the Day of Penance and Reparation for the Sin of Abortion.
On that day I encourage everyone to participate in Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament and to do penance.”- Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, Phoenix
WHAT CAN WE DO? LET'S UNITE IN PRAYER
THROUGHOUT THE NATION.
The National Catholic Daughter of the Americas have designated January as the month for prayers to stop abortion. A RESOLUTION HAS BEEN PASSED BY BOTH NATIONAL CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMEREICAS AND ARIZONA STATE CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS that reads:
"that ...Courts who cannot join the National Walk of Life in Washington D.C., should promote or participate in a day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in their local parishes to atone for the sins of abortion on the date of the Roe vs. Wade decision, January 22."
This resolution passed unanimously.
Let's ALL join TOGETHER and have a Day of Reparation for the Sins of Abortion this year.
You can sponsor the Day of Reparation by having Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in your parish. Some parishes are able to have it all day long, other have a few hours in the evening. During the Exposition hours, have different groups in the parish say the Rosary on the hour. Some other activities include Mass, Benediction, Chaplets of Mercy, etc.

“The March for Life calls for alternatives to the taking of innocent life and for respect for all the potential and possibilities of those yet to be born. Even though you may not be comfortable with public demonstrations, society needs to hear from you. I look forward to walking with our priests, religious, deacons and laity ~ and I hope, with you.”

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO FIGHT ABORTION IS TO
HAVE A
DAY OF ADORATION AND PRAYER IN ATONEMENT FOR THE SINS OF ABORTION ON JANUARY 22
January 22, 2009 will be the 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Since that decision, it is estimated that over 40 million babies have been victims of the horrific death of abortion. We as a nation have permitted this violation of the sanctity of life.
National Catholic Daughters of the Americas, (click to read their resolution), Phoenix Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and other Arizona organizations are promoting Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in reparation for the sin of abortion on Thursday, January 22, the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
It is not too late to sponsor a Holy Hour at your parish or to encourage participation at other parishes, for healing those affected by abortions and for conversion of those who promote abortion.
This is something that should be done nationwide.
Each year, in conjunction with the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (January 22), a National Prayer Vigil for Life is held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Thousands travel from all corners of the country to take part in the opening liturgy and all-night prayer vigil.
Dioceses and parishes should conduct similar prayer vigils so that those unable to travel might participate in this prayer occasion. This date is also designated as a particular day of penance in the Roman Missal.
Gail Quinn, Secretariat for Pro Life Activities, said, "The observance of this 'day of penance ... and of prayer' is mandatory (the approved adaptation reads "shall be observed")."
The following prayer from Priests for Life, is prayed as a novena between January 14-22 in reparation for Roe vs. Wade, because the U.S. Catholic Bishops set aside January 22, as a special day of prayer and penance for the holocaust.
God and Father of Life,
You have created every human person,
and have opened the way for each to have eternal life.
We live in the shadow of death.
Tens of millions of your children have been killed
thanks to the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
Father, have mercy on us.
Heal our land
and accept our offering of prayer and penance.
In your love for us,
turn back the scourge of abortion.
May each of us exult in hearts full of hope,
and hands full of mercy,
and work together to build a culture of life.
We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
“This year, I encourage every parish and mission to provide your parishioners with an opportunity to attend an extended period of exposition and prayer. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 373 states, "In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass ‘For Peace and Justice’ (no. 22 of the ‘Masses for Various Needs') should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day." Whether following Mass, or at another appropriate time that day, prayer before our Eucharistic Lord should be encouraged.”
